CrossFit MF

Our gym

Portland's misfits since 2009

We opened our doors in 2009 as CrossFit MF, a licensed CrossFit affiliate, and we have been the original home of the Misfits ever since. Same gym, same mission, same owner on the floor. This has been an owner-operated gym from day one: the person coaching your class and the person whose name is on the lease are the same person. New to the method? Start with what CrossFit is.

Why we're here

The mission

The mission of CrossFit MF is to enable our members to live long, healthy, physically independent lives. We do this by building real-world capacity and resilience, fueling our bodies with intention, and training shoulder to shoulder in a community that rejects shortcuts and embraces incremental progress.

Do it right. Do it well. Then do it again.

Our mission, in Hunter's words

The class hour

What an hour here looks like

Every class runs one hour and follows the same rhythm, so you always know what you're walking into:

  1. Whiteboard

Your coach briefs the day: the workout, the why, and how it scales.

  2. Warm-up

Coach-led prep aimed at exactly what the workout demands.

  3. The WOD

The workout of the day, coached wall to wall, scaled to you.

  4. Cool-down & celebration

Scores on the whiteboard, fist bumps all around. The community part isn't optional.

What's in the building

Home base is 1077 Riverside Street in Portland, ME. Here's what you'll find once you're through the door.

1 of 6: The lobby

  • The main floor

An open floor built for barbells, rigs, and room to move. While a class is running it belongs to that class; outside those blocks it's yours for open gym.

  • Cardio Theater, upstairs

Where the engine work goes when the workout calls for steady breathing rather than a barbell.

  • Three showers

Because plenty of you go straight to work from the 6 AM class. On busy mornings one bathroom goes toilet-only to keep the queue moving.

  • The lobby store

Water bottles, shirts, and the rest. It runs on the honor system: take what you need, scan the QR code or use the store in the StreamFit app, settle up.

Beyond the workout

The other 23 hours

You cannot exercise away a bad diet, and the hour you spend here only works if the other 23 back it up. The prescription is simple. Not easy, simple:
  • Eat real food

Meat and vegetables, nuts and seeds, some fruit, little starch, no sugar. Shop the perimeter of the grocery store.

  • Protein is king

30–40 grams with every meal, aiming for about 1 gram per pound of bodyweight.

  • Walk

7,000+ steps a day. The cheapest fitness money can't buy.

  • Sleep

7.5–9 hours a night. Recovery is where the progress actually happens.

  • Hydrate

Your bodyweight in ounces of water, every day.
